CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Tristan Duvall sat in the passenger seat of the blacked-out van, and his dark brown eyes were locked onto the front door of the hostel. His eyes matched the darkness of his thick beard, with the odd white hair flicking through. It suited his dark complexion, and Tristan had never been sure where he would call home. His ancestry was a mystery to him, and as he grew up in the care system in Madrid, he was told that he had an Argentinian father and a Spanish mother.

He didn’t care.

He didn’t have a memory of either of them.

Had never seen a photograph.

For all intents and purposes, they were young lovers who found a moment of happiness in a consistently shit world, and he had been the outcome. And from them, he had inherited their Mediterranean genes, and seemingly, from his father, impressive physical genetics. His hulking six-foot five frame was lined with thick, rounded muscles, and had been that way ever since the Infantería de Marina had moulded him into a walking weapon. He walked into a crummy town hall down a side street in Madrid, without a penny to his name, and had signed up with a shaking hand.

They steadied it and slapped a Heckler & Kock G38 in his grip and from then on, Tristan viewed most of the world through the sights of his gun, and with the view that it was either kill or be killed. For over two decades, he had served what he called his country with pride, never once questioning an order, nor hesitating to pull the trigger. As his celebrated and widely respected career threatened to take him towards a more strategic position, he made the decision to step away from the military and went into private contracting.

A moral compass wasn’t something Tristan had ever been guided by, and putting a bullet in a man, woman or child for the right price was as easy as breathing. It made him a very wealthy and a very in-demand man, and with Dominik Silva now spending the rest of his life behind bars in a British prison, Tristan had taken up the mantle as one of the most lethal guns for hire in Europe.

He was a close associate of many rich and many powerful men.

And they didn’t come richer or more powerful than Sebastian Glass.

It was a rare occurrence to see a man of such poise so riled up, but the remit was clear.

Bring the man he believed to be Sam Pope to him.

Alive.

Sitting beside him in the van was a man he knew as Johan, a trusted wheelman who was also capable with a weapon in his hands. Tristan had used him a few times, but the man spoke little French and even less Spanish, but he knew his role. In the back, three other men were playing cards, shuffling uncomfortably in the minimal space, all of them strapped up courtesy of the buffet of weapons that had been laid out for them in Glass’ hanger.
